This is the second time that the team of Third Editions has ordered a cover for the First print of a book. The first time, it was about Hayao Miyazaki’s work, written by Gaël Berton. This time it's a book about the arcade years of SEGA. We accepted this order with pleasure on the one hand because we liked the subject of retro Japanese pop culture but also because it is always a pleasure to work with this publishing house. They do a very good job, their books are neat and they call on many designers that we appreciate for the realization of the covers (Mathieu Bablet, Guillaume Singelin, Katsuya Terada, Tony Valente, and many others!). It’s nice for us to see our work alongside such artists.
C’est la deuxième fois que l’équipe de Third Editions fait appel à nous pour la réalisation d’une couverture pour la First print (édition limitée) d’un livre. La première fois, il s’agissait de L'œuvre de Hayao Miyazaki , écrit par Gaël Berton. Cette fois, c’est un livre sur les années arcades de SEGA. Nous avons accepté cette commande avec plaisir d’une part parce que le sujet de pop culture japonaise nous plaisait mais aussi parce que c’est toujours un plaisir de travailler avec cette maison d’édition. Il font un très beau travail, leurs livres sont soignés et ils font appel à de nombreux dessinateurs qu’on apprécie pour la réalisation des couvertures (Mathieu Bablet, Guillaume Singelin, Katsuya Terada, Tony Valente, et plein d’autres!). C’est agréable pour nous de voire notre travail aux côté de tels artistes.


Another significant detail: we have carte blanche for the image. So we made several tiny research sketches (about 4x2cm) and when we like an idea, we quickly draw it in A5 size to put a few splashes of color and see if it works. We submit the sketch to the Third Editions team, who gives us the go-ahead to proceed to the final version.
Un autre détail non négligeable : nous avons carte blanche pour l’image. Nous avons donc fait plusieurs minuscules croquis de recherche ( environ 4x2cm) et quand une idée nous plait, nous la dessinons rapidement en format A5 pour poser quelques touches de couleur et voir si ça fonctionne. Nous soumettons ainsi le croquis à l’équipe de Third Editions qui nous donne le feu vert pour passer à la version finale.

So I make a pencil in A4 size on 80g machine paper with a 2B mechanical pencil. The background is inspired by small abandoned alleys that can be found almost everywhere in medium-sized Japanese cities. This offers a somewhat sad and nostalgic atmosphere. In contrast, the girl who evokes both the player and the game character has a rebellious and dynamic side that refers to a time when video games gave this feeling of experiencing new and strong things, of being a medium barely emerging and full of innovations.



Using a light table, Olivier transfers the drawing to a Watercolor Canson Heritage 300g paper (gift from Issekinicho publishers) with a Faber Castel 8B pencil.



Finally Olivier sets the color with Raphaël Soft Aqua brushes of various sizes (which we were advised by our friend Mateusz Urbanowicz) and his eternal box of watercolors Winsor & Newton. And There you go !

The book will be available at Third Editions in a limited edition from tomorrow, January 21.
